Aleya Kassam is a Kenyan storyteller, writer and performer who brings stories to life in a variety of forms, from the page to stage, radio to film, advertisements to documentaries. She was Head of Copy at BBDO Mediadege, and also produced Kenya’s largest literature festival The Storymoja Hay Festival.
Aleya is a founding member of The LAM Sisterhood, which wrote the award winning documentary theatre show, Too Early For Birds: The Brazen Edition. It told the stories of extraordinary women whose lives had been invisibled from Kenyan history.
For the last 5 years, Aleya’s writing home has been www.chanyado.wordpress.com, which was nominated for best new blog at the BAKE Awards, and has been described by Nanjala Nyabola as ‘shuffling between personal narrative and political observation, the blog allows you to think about the real impact of political or social issues on the individual.’
She has been published in various platforms online including The Sahan Journal, Jalada, Popula and The Rumpus, and has written for and performed on stages around the world, from Nairobi to Kigali to Stuttgart. She considers herself a promiscuous creative, with multiple projects in development; a YA novel, two musical theatre pieces, a stage play (or two), and a kids poetry book for her little pumpkin of a nephew.
