Asiimwe Deborah Kawe is an award winning playwright, performer and producer. Her recent plays include Will Smith Alike, Forgotten World, Cooking Oil, Appointment with gOD and Un-entitled which have all been received either as productions or stage readings in the United States of America and East Africa. Asiimwe is a recipient of the 2010 Theatre Communications Group (TCG) New Generation Future Leaders grant to work with the Sundance Institute Theatre Program.
Cooking Oil, Lagoma is Searching, You are that Man, and My Secret all received productions at the Uganda National Cultural Centre. Asiimwe’s interest in storytelling and performance started in childhood, in South Western Uganda. She was raised in an oral literature and story telling culture. Over the years, Asiimwe has professionally fortified her skills through education and training. She is a 2006 recipient of a scholarship of merit in Writing For Performance from California Institute of the Arts, where she graduated with a Master in Fine Arts (MFA) degree in 2009. In 2006, she won the award for the overall best Arts student at Makerere University in Uganda, where she pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Theatre and Performing Arts. Using storytelling, song and dance, Asiimwe’s writing is deeply rooted in lived experiences and shared realities of silenced cultures. Asiimwe lives in Kampala-Uganda, where she continues to write as well as work.
