Aida Mbowa is a Ugandan multidisciplinary performance artist with a dual PhD in Drama and Humanities from Stanford University in California. Having represented Uganda in Ethiopia at the first Sundance Theater East Africa Director’s Lab in 2012, once again, Aida represented the country at the Sundance Theater lab in Utah in 2013. In November, she acted in French for a Sundance Labs workshop production of a Rwandese play in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Aida co-wrote and starred in a short film Missing with Ugandan American actor Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine; film festivals around the world are screening the film, which had its world premiere in Uganda in August 2014. Aida is a 2014 fellow for the International Society of Performing Arts and a contributing arts journalist for Mail and Guardian Africa. Aida’s life objective is to challenge aesthetic norms, conservative ideologies and create critical art that encourages a more compassionate universe.
