Elizabeth Senja Spackman

Play Writer-Actor

Elizabeth Senja Spackman has taught workshops in creative writing and performance at the National University in Butare and Ishyo Art Centre in Kigali. She worked with the group Art Works Ink to create the new theatre piece Sky Like Sky, which toured to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, South Africa.

Elizabeth has an MFA in poetry from the University of Iowa’s Writer’s Workshop. She has worked intensively with Rhodessa Jones’s Project: Theatre for Incarcerated Women in the prisons of San Francisco, Pretoria, Johannesburg and Paris. Her curiosity about East Africa’s arts scene was sparked by winning the SLS Poetry Prize in 2009, which sent her to Nariobi and Lamu, Kenya. She has taught courses in writing, literature and film in institutions as diverse as the University of Iowa, Borough of Manhattan Community College, and Naselle Youth Camp for incarcerated youth. She currently teaches in the literature department at Kigali Institute of Education. Her current theatre projects are Frontiers, Run run run and Radio Play.
