Summary:

At the 2024 Kampala International Theatre Festival, a workshop focused on the pervasive issue of sexual harassment within the arts industry. The session included discussions on its prevalence, impact, and strategies for prevention and response.

Panelists and participants, predominantly from theatre but also including some from the film industry, shared insights and personal experiences.

Key points included the definition of sexual harassment, its various forms, and the systemic challenges in reporting and addressing it within Uganda's entertainment sector.

Legal advice was given on how artists can protect themselves, and there was a call for more legal and psychological support for victims. Initiatives like 'Freelancers of Uganda' were highlighted as efforts to provide opportunities beyond the mainstream where harassment might lead to blacklisting.

The workshop also advocated for ongoing dialogue, engaging with governmental bodies like the Ministry of Gender, and creating a community of trust and support to combat harassment more effectively.
